Easy Ways to Eat More Fruits and Vegetables as Part of a Healthy Diet

According to the fruitsandveggiesmatter.gov (sponsored by the CDC) website, over 90 percent of adults and children don’t eat the recommended amount of fruits and vegetables. One of the main reasons many of us don’t get enough is because our lives are fast-paced, and most of us tend to eat on the go. Since fruit and vegetables usually require some degree of extra effort when preparing meals, and are sometimes unavailable when we eat out, they’re usually the first thing to get left out when we’re in a rush. I know how hard it is to get enough fruit and vegetables everyday, especially when you’re busy! But here are a few ideas to help you out:

  • Add fruit to your cereal, low-fat or fat-free yogurt, or oatmeal.
  • Snack on fruit during the day. Grab an apple, banana, or some grapes on your way out the door.
  • Eat a colorful salad at lunch. Try mixed greens with tomatoes, carrots, broccoli, and bell peppers.
  • Make fruits and vegetables about half your plate.
  • Snack on raw veggies with or without a healthy low-fat or fat-free dip.
  • Drink V8, V8 Splash, or another vegetable juice instead of your usual soda or snack while you’re at work or school.

  • A Winter’s Day Walk in Maine

    There is nothing like walking your dog on a crisp winter day in Maine. The video below, while a bit long, was an attempt to capture this experience. Keith, our yellow lab, is always up for a good walk. However our wolf hybrid, Canaan, opted to stay behind on this day. The day was cold and windy. The snow was crusted and deep. After Keith looses his stick he proceeds to the wood line in an attempt to retrieve a new one. Unfortunately they are all still attached to trees. I have been told the best part is toward the end, so feel free to skip ahead. Canaan, is featured at the end with a closing verse that my youngest really enjoys.
